IT’S FRIYAY, GOTTA GET DOWN ON FRIYAYYY

This week went by so friggen fast. I love it! Tonight I’m going out for a HUGE Italian dinner in Rhode Island for my brother’s birthday and I am honestly just fantasizing about the bread and its only 10:30AM here.

Today I am presenting you with an update on my fitness life – particularly my spin classes. I haven’t posted my playlists or talked about my classes in quite some time!

So – in my spin classes lately I have been loving patterned rides as well as a lot of speed. Usually I am a quality over quality girl with the sprints and speed themed songs, but this past week we hit it it hard. Don’t get me wrong I love my jumps, my tapbacks and my isolations but being in the saddle and grinding out a hill and sprinting to the finish line are the meat and potates of my ride.

IMG_0905.PNG

Here is the ride I did all last week. We ended the ride with three speed songs…

We started with Kiesza’s “Give it to the Moment” for some pick ups in standing on a low hill. 30 seconds each. When students come up into standing, I always tell them to use their legs. The handle bars are there for support; not a crutch and they should float up and float down. For speed cues, I tell them I want you to run – but it’s not a sprint and sure as hell ain’t a jog…this helps people find their groove in standing without the pressure of going too fast… if they feel the pressure then they don’t put the right resistance on. You  gotta play with them a little bit.

The second speed song we did was Christina Aguilera’s “Let There Be Love”…banger. I have been playing this since I started teaching. It’s a PC song and has the quickest and most motivating beat. After we did standing accelerations, we did this song in the saddle on a 5 (which is beneath a low hill where you take off like a bat out of hell but you are not on a flat at all). For this we stayed in the saddle and did 75% of max. This way they are movin’ and groovin’ without sprinting JUST yet.

Last song – the finale! Ferry Corsten “Feel It”. This will put it all together. What I love about this song is that at the beginning the beat picks up within the first 5 seconds and I use that as an opportunity for the first full sprint. This way students don’t even think about the sprint and they just go for it. Of course, I warn them so when I hit play they are ready. The second sprint is a ladder – 65%-75%-sprint. 45 seconds total with  little increases in speed every 15 seconds. They should be doggin’ it after the second round. And third round is a full out 20 second sprint. Usually for my students’ very last sprint I really pep them up. I saw things like “You came here to work tonight. This is your FINAL push, don’t let yourself down” or “I want you to look back and know that you kicked your own ass tonight”. With the right crew, this gets them amped. After I count them down, I turn the volume louder and I don’t say anything…I let the beat take over with the motivation. I usually get goosebumps because they are working it so hard!

Hopefully for some you speedsters or instructors out there that are looking how to spice up your playlists that this could be a little nugget for you! I have been really enjoying thinking out of the box with my playlists.I have been re-purposing songs and using them at different points in my ride to just try new things. I go through phases where I feel more motivated by songs and other times where I’m way more into the thrill of making the perfect choreography sequences.

Thanks for reading! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Drugstore Primers I’m In Love With

Howdy.

Let’s get to business (to defeat the Huns…awful joke…Mulan? Anyone? Bueller?)

I am here to report to you all about two primers that I have found at Target that I’m in love with. I’ll admit that when I first bought these that they just were sittin’ pretty on my desk but over the last month or so I have been alternating the between the two and can’t be bothered with anything else.

First up is Pixi’s Glow Mist. When I bought this I didn’t even know if I would ever use it but I was intrigued. One day after using my prescription retinol cream the nigh before, my chin and forehead were all flaky. My skin is super sensitive to retinol so I generally us the smallest amount and still see results but with the flakes. I sort of freaked out and so I quickly exfoliated to get rid of all the dead skin and I grabbed this Glow Mist to give me a boost. It did wonders. Since argan oil is a little bit thicker in its consistency, I thought it gave me a nice dewy look without putting on drops of oil. I think this provided a great canvas for me to work in foundation and other products as well as combat against potential dryness. Also, since we are well into spring here in the Northeast and the humidity is already starting up, I have been liking this mist instead of a hydrating serum. It does just enough to hit me with moisture without taking a long time to settle in. If you have oily skin that tends to be dehydrated but you air on the side of caution with moisture serums, give this a whirl! I can’t put it down. I have been even spritzing my face during the day if I feel dry.

The second primer in rotation is NYX’s Honey Dew Me Up. Ok. This stuff packs some serious longevity into my regimen. It’s a little sticky at first but sinks right in and smooths everything over. My blush looks so good all day long and I get this lovely glowing effect in areas like my forehead and fatty parts of my cheeks that give me that fully rested look. One of my favorite things about it is that when I rub it in, it’s very cooling so I think it also depuffs a little bit. The honey is antimicrobial and helps nourish at the same time. This is super gentle on my skin and I am slightly obsessed. The packaging is so cute and I just love the name of it – very Tarte and TooFaced-esque. The past few times that I have gone home to RI this goes into my Kate Spade travel bag.

Thanks you guys for reading! These budget friendly options are sure to not disappoint. If you are in the market for priming, I would give these two options a go. I think if you are a make up fanatic you should definitely spring for both since they are different!

Marathon Monday!

What a beautiful day! Today is Marathon Monday here in Boston. I have a handful of friends that are running and the energy here is just crazy! Of course I am at work because I’m a newbie but I am there in spirit. Last year I went to the finish line and it was so moving. Where I used to previously work (a main Boston hospital) we had so many employees run for our institution and I just cried when I saw some of them cross the finish line. So if any of you are running today or are runners or even avid exercises – send some good vibes to our runners. A few years ago, this day was ALMOST ruined but we have showed how strong we are and how we believe so much in the sanctity of this race and our city!

Monday Blues

It’s raining and I think I’m still hungover…

This is NOT how I wanted to start my Monday. Yesterday was the ultimate lazy day. I had homework to do for my grad school class and am just saving it for tonight. I didn’t go grocery shopping and I have a shit ton of laundry to do. So what DID I do yesterday? I pretty much laid on my couch all day. I can’t even remember the last time I did that. Needless to say – today is a struggle. I did a lot of drinking and eating this weekend and feel like I need another day to recuperate and get my week in order.

The weather was great up here…sunny and cold. I went to Telegraph Hill on Saturday and Sunday for some fresh air and a great view. We’ve been getting a lot of rain and its been miserable so it was lovely to have some sun and a little dose of spring. I hope everyone had good weather and was able to get out there and have some fun. This week I have a lot going on – more training for work, a lot of school work and a lot of things need to get done around the house!

I will be back this week with some good makeup posts 🙂 🙂

My boo came up to see me Friday night and I dragged him on this walk. But – the views from the top make it so worth it.

My roommate’s mom came over yesterday and we all cooked together. It was so great. Those bagels are on challah bread. Carb heaven.

The last part of the climb up to Telegraph Hill. This is a really fun place to get your work out in. I love the it.

Amazing. Just when you feel lost in the city – I always look out and think, “wow I am so lucky to live here and work in such a great city”.

The Current Wishlist

Happy Thursday to all of you! With spring here, (but here in the NE it does NOT feel like spring) I’ve got that itch to do a little bit of shopping **insert monkey emoji that is covering its mouth**. I ain’t gon’ lie, I did already purchase one of these items and cannot wait for it/them to arrive. I also received my 15% off for being a VIB at Sephora and am so friggen ecstatic about it. I will most certainly be making a trip to the Prudential Center this weekend for a little bit of some fun! See my wishlist below!!!!

The Sunday Riley Good Genes has been at the top of my list for awhile. After I purchased it in a value package with the Luna Oil I have been yearning for a full bottle. I just fell in love with it. It helped even out my skin texture on the tops of my cheek bones – which is where I seem to get get a lot of milia. It’s really potent so I know if and when I buy this, it will greatly help my complexion out. I think I favor this over the Luna Oil.

Banana Republic lace up pointed toe pumps. Ok! These are currently on sale for 40% off….get to it. These come in black, nude and this mint color. I bought the mint and cannot wait to wear them this summer. The lace up is just so sexy and I love the pointed toe…these will be great for nights when I need a pedicure but still need that hot ass shoe. The heel height is perfect me for me and are so versatile….jeans…pencil skirts….bodycon dresses…Also the mint will be a great pop of color! EEEEEEEeee!!! So in love. An extra bonus is that the reviews online said these were so comfortable. TIP: ALWAYS READ THE REVIEWS!!!!!!

Ok so this Marc Jacobs mascara has been on my wishlist for awhile. All the bloggers are going crazy over it and I have been lusting for it. I tried a sample, fell in love….simple as that. I recently bought the Bobbi Brown Smokey Lash mascara which I like, but I sort of want to get this MJ offering in my collection ASAP. It gives the most feathery but intense lashes!

These two Oribe products I have purchased numerous times. I currently don’t have the Dry Texturizing Spray in my possession and I miss it. I have just been using my Bumble Dry Shampoo but for those days where my hair doesn’t need dry shampoo but needs a little oomph – that’s when I grab the Dry Texturizing Spray. It’s light, gives my hair some ‘tude and it makes me SO happy.

The other Oribe product is the Dry Thickening Spray which I’m all out of. This is supposed to be for the middle of your strands and give some life to the hair. It does JUST that. I am currently on my third can. Oribe’s products are just top of the line….I have used their hair oil, shampoo and conditioner and now these sprays….You cannot go wrong. They make great gifts and last forever. A little does go a long way which is how I justify the steep price tag. If I had to choose between the texturizer and the thickening spray – if you are like me with thin ass hair, get the thickening spray! The best part about all of this – you can buy purse sizes of pretty much all the products so you can try them out and bring them with you on vacation.

Next up is the Kate Somerville Nourish Hydrating Firming Mist. I gotta say I am a sucker for marketing and need this ish. I love mists, essences, etc. right now and this stuff seems like it packs a punch. I also love Kate Somerville so I am willing to give this puppy a go.

Lastly we have my beloved Sephora Collection Face Masks. For 6 bucks you just can’t go wrong. They work, they’re fun and cheap. The two that are pictured above I haven’t tried yet. They recently redid the packaging and added a couple to their collection. The blue is for detoxifying and purifying and the the green is for nourishing and repairing. I want to go for these two because my skin does feel sort of clogged up and I have some acne marks that I want to clear up with the nourishing and repairing mask. These are so fun for a girls’ night in!

Thank you all for reading!!!  I hope you enjoyed what I am currently coveting. What are you current lusting over? There’s gotta be something!!!

Monday Blues

Happy Monday to all of you. I woke up to lots of snow this AM here in Boston and the commute was quite treacherous! This week I am back to my normal schedule…Now that I am in the third week of my job, my spin classes will start back up again and I feel a little more regimented.

I had a great weekend. I went out for dinner with my boyfriend on Saturday night and also saw my family this weekend.I love having time to play and then quality family time. I was also made such a happy girl because my dog seems to have finally healed from his hip displacement that happened on Christmas. We finally have him out of the cage and he seems to not limp around as much and just seems SO much more joyful. When I went to see him I got a lot of licks and he received a lot of tummy scratches.

Here are a few pics for all of you! I think I am going to upload a current wishlist this week. There is so much out there right now that I want to try and replenish! I hope everyone has a great week.

Thanks for reading.

I reorganized my desk this weekend. It desperately needed some love!

It was the most bizarre weather yesterday. Snow – rain  sun – wind. I kind of loved it!

THE WEEKEND.

Happy Friday everyone! I cannot tell you how happy I am that in about 5 hours it will be the weekend. I have had such a stressful week. I realize how much I hate being the new girl at work. I am awkward, sensitive and have been exhausted. When you are learning new skills and meeting new people, by the time 5pm rolls around I honestly have nothing else to give. I took this week off from spin and I am so glad I did. I have only worked out twice and I realized how much my body craves the exertion. I get so stuck in my head and sweating it all out is so cathartic for me. It helps me sleep better, it helps clear my mind and I just feel more confident. Needless to say, I admit I am going through a little bit of a rough patch, however, I have been trying to keep to a really simple routine and try to take care of myself. Below I have a few essentials for you all to sift through that help me relax and totally keep me sane.

Capture

I’ve only worked out twice this week. I went for a run one day which felt so friggen good and the other day I did a strength workout with a few bursts of cardio. One of the moves I did a couple of sets of was this pike on a stability ball. I typically don’t go into a pike but rather keep my shins on the ball in a plank position and roll my legs into my chest for a killer ab workout. I pull into a pike every once in awhile and on Wednesday I thought I would just go for it. Once in pike, I lifted one leg into the air and then switched legs followed by 12 reps of bringing my legs into my chest while in a regular plank. It is so challenging to bring yourself into pike since its a lot on your wrists and you really have to brace your core to bring your bum up into the air. It’s a great movement for those who are working towards their handstands or want to ramp up their ab series. I decided to for this move because it’s a real confidence builder and you need total concentration.

Next item is my lavender salts from CVS. These are so great. I totally relax and I put about a cup in the bath. They’re so cheap and you get such great volume. If you have trouble sleeping I would highly recommend a bath with lavender anything to help your body get into sleep mode. I always have a bag of these laying around the house. I have really tight feet (probably because of my tight calves) and this concoction in the bath helps melt away a lot of the tightness and stress.

My third savior is Odesza! I just love every song and every remix by this group. I listen to them in the morning when I get ready, in the car on the way home, when I workout and in the bathtub. It’s very ethereal electronic. When I teach barre I always do a savasana and play a full song. One of my favorite songs is White Lies, just speaks to me for some reason. When I used to take public transportation to work I used to listen to their stuff to relax while dealing with commuting stress. Since I literally just explained so many scenarios of when I listen to Odesza, it is literally no surprise that I have been listening to them every chance that I get this week.

Because I have been training at work, I have had a lot of downtime in between shadowing, independent work and meetings. Of course I log onto The Coveteur every day to read the latest article about a designer, new face oil or current workout trend. I just get lost in the pictures and the stories. It’s a girl’s heaven and I highly recommend the site if you love anything about fashion, beauty, working out, etc.

Lastly – of course a corny quote. I don’t normally like these sort of cheesy sayings but I saw this on instagram and was like…. TRUE DAT. SO this is my mantra. I gotta be tough and just stop being like “poor me… help me” but rather “come on, girl put on your big girl panties and work it out”…sometimes its hard to walk that walk but it’s rewarding when you get to the other side. I have a tendency to get really wrapped up in my own head and stay there for awhile. NOT GOOD but I am most certainly working on it.

Well – hey, you made it to the end of the blog. I hope everyone has a great weekend and thank you for reading my melancholy posts. I will hopefully return back to normal this coming week (after I finally get paid).

Thank you for reading,

Hill XO
